Tour de France 2021, stage 4: Mark Cavendish wins in the sprint

In the sprint, on a slight false flat rising from Fougères, Mark Cavendish (Deceuninck) was a length ahead of the Frenchman Nacer Bouhanni, also back in the foreground, and the Belgian Jasper Philipsen in the 4e stage of the Tour de France 2021.

After several years in retreat, in particular because of the Epstein-Barr virus, “Cav” returned to the age of 36 with success in the Tour. His previous victory was in 2016.

Starting late in his team, the native of the Isle of Man took the place of the Irishman Sam Bennett, green jersey of the Tour 2020.

With this 31e victory, Cavendish, who won for the first time in 2008, moved closer to the Belgian legend Eddy Merckx, who holds with 34 stages the record of success in the Tour.

Platoon protest movement

At the start of Redon, the runners led a protest movement after the numerous falls of the first days. They dismounted for a minute, a few hundred meters after the flag was lowered signaling the real start of the stage, before resuming the road.

The peloton requested, according to Radio Tour, that a “Dialogue on safety is established with all stakeholders in cycling, UCI, organizers, teams and riders”.

The race really started ten kilometers further with the attack of Belgian Brent Van Moer immediately joined by French Pierre-Luc Périchon. But the duo obtained only a margin of less than three minutes, a gap controlled by the teams of Cavendish, the most active, of van der Poel, and also of the French Arnaud Démare (Groupama-FDJ).

The day after the retirement of Australian Caleb Ewan, leader of his Lotto team, Van Moer was the most insistent. The recent winner of a Dauphiné stage was caught at the last minute, 150 meters from the line.

On Wednesday June 30, van der Poel will tackle the first of the two time trials of the Tour with 8 seconds ahead of world champion Julian Alaphilippe, at the start of the 27.2 kilometers between Changé and Laval, in Mayenne.
