Four days before the end, the yellow jersey of this Tour de France is firmly attached to the shoulders of Primoz Roglic. At the end of the 17e stage, considered the flagship event of this 2020 edition and won by Miguel Angel Lopez (Astana), who at the same time climbs to third place in the general classification, the Slovenian rider in the Jumbo-Visma took a few seconds off his main opponent, Tadej Pogacar (UAE-Team Emirates).

At the top of the Loze pass, at an altitude of 2,304 meters, the highest point of this 107e Lap, Primoz Roglic, second on the stage, left his runner up by fifteen seconds, in a final knife, on a dizzying slope. In the provisional general classification, Roglic is now 57 seconds ahead of his young compatriot, wearing the best youngster’s white jersey.
Under the eyes of Emmanuel Macron, who attended the final in François Lemarchand’s car, Miguel Angel Lopez beat Roglic by fifteen seconds for the stage victory. Pogacar, third, moved closer to Roglic on the final ramp before finally giving up a little ground. The American Sepp Kuss, Roglic’s last lieutenant, took fourth place ahead of the Australian Richie Porte, fifth in the stage at more than a minute and now fourth overall at 3:05.
Egan Bernal did not take the start
Everything turned out as expected in the interminable final ascent, 21.5 kilometers long and extremely steep in its final part above the Méribel resort. The French Julian Alaphilippe, the Ecuadorian Richard Carapaz and the Spaniard Gorka Izagirre, the three survivors of the breakaway launched in the first half hour, were successively joined in this climb. Carapaz, the last to resist, held out for a long time. The winner of the last Giro even increased his advantage (45 seconds less than 5 kilometers from the finish) before losing 3 kilometers from the pass, after the decisive acceleration of Miguel Angel Lopez, who is playing his first Tour, at 26 years old.

The winner of the 2019 Tour, the Colombian Egan Bernal, resigned before the departure from Grenoble at the request of his Ineos team. Defaulting last Sunday in the Grand Colombier, he had fallen in the standings until the 16e place nearly twenty minutes from the yellow jersey.
Thursday, the last day in the Alps includes three classics (Cormet de Roselend, Saisies, Aravis) and a rare and very steep climb, to reach the Plateau des Glières, at the end of the 18e stage, 175 kilometers long between Méribel and La Roche-sur-Foron.
