To celebrate World Star Wars Day, “May The 4th”, Disney + is showing the first unseen 75-minute episode of the animated series. Another surprise: an unreleased short film by Simpson inspired by the George Lucas saga.
When we think that “Star Wars Day”, this event in the form of a world day, was born from a simple pun, “May the 4th be with you”. This is perhaps how we measure the power of a saga like Star Wars, 44 years after its creation.
For two years, the pandemic has been right to physical gatherings and other “cosplays” allowing fans to come together around the world to celebrate their passion for the saga imagined by George Lucas with dignity.
And yet, thanks to social networks as well as to the Disney + platform, it is almost certain that the most trendy sentence of this Tuesday, May 4, 2021 is “May the force be with you!”
Known by its original name “May The 4th Be With you”, Star Wars Day was established from an English word game combining the date of May 4 and the expression “May the Force be with you”.
For the record, this celebration dates back to the election on May 4, 1979 of Margaret Thatcher as Prime Minister. To celebrate this victory, his party offers itself a half-page advertisement in the London Evening News, with a message that does not lack humor: “May the Fourth Be with you, Maggie», Already playing on the growing notoriety of the saga Star wars.
Fans were quick to pick up on this pun … And May 4th thus became World Day. Star wars.
This year is therefore no exception to the rule. On this occasion, Disney + offers “ Star Wars: The Bad Batch », A brand new animated series, as well as a new short film by Simpson inspired by the George Lucas saga.
Other thematic content will also pay homage to a galaxy far, far away.
Lucasfilm and Disney +, for example, have asked fans and artists around the world to offer them a series of illustrations that will dress up the platform’s service for several days. These creations, which reinvent in an original way various films and series Star wars, will be visible on the service until May 9.
Another unprecedented surprise, the broadcast of a short film tribute Maggie Simpson in “The Awakening of the Force after the nap“. In a very, very distant nursery… but still in Springfield, Maggie goes in search of the pacifier that has been stolen from her. His adventure will make him meet young Padawans, Siths, well-known droids, intrepid rebels but also make him lead an epic fight against the dark side.
What we can already say about the piece of resistance, Star Wars: The Bad Batchis that it takes the good old recipes of war films, blending them happily with westerns of yesteryear.
This first episode picks up the storyline at the end of the Clone Wars. He presents us above all a squad of clones unlike any other, the Clone Force 99. The five members of this “Suicide Squad” at the Star wars are led by Hunter, a warrior with unorthodox methods.
Forward, bad troop!
This “Bad Batch” (which could be translated as “bad troop”) borrows from all the references of the western and war films. It goes from Twelve Bitches Aldrich, to the disillusioned mercenaries of The Savage Horde by Sam Pekinpah, through the Inglourious Basterds by Quentin Tarantino. We find pele mixes the hut, the deceitful sniper, the reprogrammed android, the electronics specialist, and the rebel leader.
The action takes place when the Republic switches to the side of the Empire, while Chancellor Palpatine has just given “order 66” to the cloned divisions which orders the elimination of the Jedi Order, supposedly traitors to the Republic … Our hotheads should have complied with this directive. But their altered chip allows them to keep a certain free will. Soon they will be joined by a young girl named Omega, a superior clone who understands the stakes of what just happened.
This first episode of an unusually long 75 minutes is effective, rhythmic and well conducted. It will be followed every Friday by a new 20-minute episode.
