The Ministry of Health issued a circular to all health practitioners, stipulating that it is prohibited to prescribe nutritional supplements based on the brand name of the supplement, and only refer to the ingredient or compound in question. The Ministry of Health circular came in implementation of directives it transmitted from higher authorities in the country, in light of the recommendations of the committee formed to study the reasons for the high prices of nutritional supplements, and appropriate solutions to address them.

Prices doubled

It is noteworthy that the prices of nutritional supplements have doubled over the past years, and reached exaggerated numbers, in addition to some health practitioners promoting specific brand names, describing them to patients and reviewers with a “brand name” despite their high prices, and the availability of food supplement varieties from the same compound for less than Half the price. Also, the nutritional supplements themselves are imported through websites for less than a third to half of the price in Saudi pharmacies.

Vitamins and minerals are added to a large number of foods, including breakfast cereals and drinks. If you also take nutritional supplements, you may be getting more than you realize in some nutrients.

Avoid taking large doses

Eating more than the recommended daily values ​​can increase the risk of side effects. Children are especially vulnerable to large doses of vitamins and minerals.

Nutritional supplements are helpful in the following cases

A vegetarian person eats certain foods.

Don’t eat enough dairy products.

You have a health condition that affects your body’s absorption and utilization of nutrients.

You find it difficult to digest and absorb nutrients.

Don’t eat well or eat fewer calories than you need.

You eat a small amount of milk, because you are not lactose intolerant or allergic to milk.

Don’t eat two or three servings a week of seafood.

Follow another diet that prohibits you from eating foods from a whole food category.
