Internet: a failure affected thousands of sites hosted by OVHcloud

This is a new failure that highlights the strategic issue of data storage. On Wednesday, October 13 at around 9 a.m., the cloud service provider and host OVHcloud experienced a service interruption, disrupting access to several thousand websites.

On the Downdetector site, many companies or individuals complained of the unavailability of their websites, or of problems such as the inability to access their emails, or even their telephone line. This is particularly the case of the site Freeze frame, of Data. govt, of the city of Strasbourg, or that of Interflora, who apologizes on Twitter for a nice pirouette.

On Twitter again, the founder and president of OVHCloud Octave Klaba indicated this morning in a series of somewhat obscure messages for non-specialists, that the failure came from the Vint Hill data center, in the eastern United States. , where the host decided to add new infrastructure to cope with traffic overload.

He attributes the interrupt to “Human error”, and indicates that it concerned the “Backbone”, that is to say the telecommunications network which connects all the infrastructures of the host.

At around 10:30 a.m., about an hour and a half after the apparent start of the outage, a few website operators reported that their site was back in business and that OVHcloud’s services were reestablished for them.

Bad news for OVH before its IPO

The outage comes at a bad time for the company, which is in the process of offering its securities to investors as part of an IPO scheduled for this Friday. OVHcloud, European champion of the cloud sector, had already been the victim of a fire in March in a data center in Strasbourg, which had also caused major disruptions on many websites.

The Secretary of State for Digital Cédric O praised the rapid repair of the service. “Like what, this kind of bug does not happen only to small businesses like Facebook”, he commented with humor, referring to the blackout that affected Facebook, Messenger, Instagram and WhatsApp for 7 hours on Monday, October 4.
