Forest Whitaker resumes with Star Wars in series recounting Rogue One’s origins

According to an indiscretion from Stellan Skarsgård, the venerable rebel of the first hour should return to service in the series Andor, expected for 2022.

Fans have known him as the panting, stunned and disillusioned rebel warlord in Rogue One, the spin-off of the Star Wars saga released in 2016 and directed by Gareth Edwards: the character of Saw Gerrera, played by Forest Whitaker, will soon resume service in a galaxy far, far away. The radical dean of the Rebellion will reappear in the series Andor, the prequel to Rogue One during filming, slipped actor Stellan Skarsgård, Thursday, in an interview with Swedish radio Sveriges. Also featured in this series, the Swede mentioned having played a quite scene “Crispy” with Forest Whitaker, whose presence in Andor has not yet been officially confirmed by Lucasfilm.

Perhaps revealed a little too soon by Stellan Skarsgård, the presence of Forest Whitaker in the series Andor will come as little surprise to fans of Star Wars, now accustomed to seeing the character of Saw Gerrera flourish in almost all derivative productions of the saga, animated series The clone wars and Star Wars Rebels at the video game Jedi: Fallen Order. More recently still, the character made an appearance in the animated series. Star Wars: The Bad Batch, still being broadcast on Disney +. Introduced as a hero of his native planet, first against the separatist droid armies (the antagonists of the prelogy released between 1999 and 2005) then against the Empire, Saw Gerrera is a resistance from the first hour, a hardened and bitter figure by years of asymmetric struggle. “He is one of the few people who will do anything to ensure that the Imperial forces do not succeed”, said the actor in 2016, about the character. His possible presence on the bill ofAndor has naturally been the source of speculation, especially since other secondary characters of Rogue One, like rebel boss Mon Mothma (Genevieve O’Reilly) have already been announced.

Presented as a prequel to the film Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, itself already thought of as a predecessor to the first historic film of the saga, the series Andor will stage the adventures of rebel Cassian Andor (Diego Luna), one of the heroes of Gareth Edwards’ film. The spy will roam the galaxy there at a time when the Rebellion is still forming, five years before the events depicted in Rogue One, and five years after the adventures of young Han Solo depicted in the 2018 film. Announced three years ago and repeatedly delayed, the series produced and co-written by Tony Gilroy (Rogue One) would still be filming. Expected for 2022, Andor will be broadcast – like all series Star wars – exclusively on the Disney + platform, the launch of which in 2019-2020 was largely based on the historic Star Wars catalog reinforced by an offer of new series, such as The Mandalorian . Next production expected on the service, The Book of Boba Fett is not expected to unveil its first pages until December 2021.
