Emma Thompson knows she took a hell of a risk agreeing to star in My dates with Leo. The 63-year-old actress, who insisted on conducting the interview in French, explains why she decided to take the plunge and embody the character of Nancy Stokes with tenderness and determination.
LE FIGARO. – What made you decide to accept this role?
Emma THOMPSON. – The first thing that comes to mind is the day I received the script from Katy Brand. We’ve been friends since Nanny McPhee. She was a little intimidated on the phone. She said: “I wrote something for you, but I don’t know if you’ll like it yet.” I found his screenplay great! It was sensitive and well written, full of joy and sadness. You could feel the guilt, the shame. I read all the nuances, all the emotions of a woman in her sixties who wonders about life and desire. For me it was clear. I had to make this movie.
