Dance: with “Somnole”, Boris Charmatz in the mists of the unconscious

In December 2021, the cold pierced the century-old stones of the Saint-Eustache church in Paris, where Boris Charmatz presented his last show as part of the Festival d’Automne. Under the effect of the thermal contrast, vapors of sweat escaped from the body of the dancer, heated by his movements, forming around him a halo just perceptible to the eye. The phenomenon will certainly not be observed in the cozy walls of a theater, at the MC 93 in Bobigny until this Sunday, January 23, then on tour.

Yet will remain the invisible mists where Dozed, navigating in this state between waking and sleeping, conducive to daydreaming and all possibilities. He inspired Boris Charmatz with this boldly contoured solo in which the choreographer interprets both the steps and the music, using a whistling talent that we did not recognize in him. In his repertoire, Bach rubs shoulders with Ennio Morricone, Vivaldi crosses paths with Elvis Presley in complete harmony while his tall figure deploys its singular grace.

A suspended dance

The whistled melodies and movements seem to share the mystery of their origins. From what mysterious corner of memory do the notes spring? What unconscious motor governs the choice of such port de bras, pirouette or inclination of the bust? The music and the gesture flourish in the same breath crossing the body of this dancer/man band.

Boris Charmatz, who will take over the management of the Tanzteater in Wuppertal (Germany) in September 2022, the company of Pina Bausch, who died in 2009, is a great player and does not hesitate, using often confusing concepts and challenges, to beat the cards with each creation.

In this interrupted search, Dozed opens a new door to infinite imaginations, like an invitation to let yourself be carried away by the presence of this inhabited artist. In a delicate suspense,it offers a one-hour parenthesis, a bubble of resistance at the heart of the mad race of the world.
