Al-Rashed: Traditional media is distinguished from new by two main characteristics

In the presence of the Chairman of the Dubai Media Council Sheikh Ahmed bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, and during one of the sessions of the nineteenth session of the Arab Media Forum, organized today by virtually the Dubai Press Club, with the remote participation of media leaders and experts from the region and the world, the journalist and writer in the Middle East newspaper presented Abdul-Rahman Al-Rashed, his evaluation of the Arab media during the previous stage and his vision of its future, especially in light of the profound repercussions brought about by the global Covid-19 crisis, saying that “the traditional and modern media achieved an unprecedented turnout during the Corona crisis.” He said that traditional media has two main characteristics, first it has huge numbers of followers, and secondly it has a huge amount of information that it publishes consistently and credibly.

Tough challenges

Al-Rashed said during the session that the year 2020 was a turbulent and challenging year, and especially difficult for the media due to the Coronavirus crisis, and he said that the only thing that we may agree on during this year is the difficulty of the challenges we have gone through.

Al-Rashed explained that the Arab media during the year 2020 was part of the problem and also part of the solution, to the extent that digital platforms contributed to alleviating the crisis of direct communication between humans due to the fears that spread due to the outbreak of the virus, as much as some media failed to test the credibility. Al-Rashed stressed that the social media audience bears a large part of the responsibility for what is being talked about in terms of negative aspects, whether spreading fabricated news or spreading rumors, leading to intentionally or unintentionally seeking to spread fear and panic in the hearts of people, whom the crisis put in a state of anxiety, and pushed them. To stick to any information that may be fundamentally incorrect.

Year of information

Al-Rashed added during the session that this year, from his viewpoint, is classified as the “year of information”, and an essential part of the information industry is the media, pointing out that many traditional and modern media outlets achieved during the Corona crisis an unprecedented turnout during his media career, and the reason is interest The whole world has one issue that threatens all of humanity, unlike previous years when people used to gather different issues.

Traditional media is renewed

Al-Rashed continued his speech, saying: “It is not objective to blow up the achievements of traditional media and only believe in the idea that groups of society believe and use digital platforms, because the category that works in traditional and new media is the same,” noting that the accounts of social media pioneers, no matter how much they follow, do not go beyond A few million, and the information provided by the owners of these accounts is not continuous, while the traditional media, which I prefer to call “renewable media”, has two main characteristics. First, it has huge numbers of followers, and secondly it has a huge amount of information that it publishes consistently and credibly.

The influence of the media on politics

Regarding the extent of the exaggerated interest by the Arab media in political issues, Al-Rashed said that the idea that some are promoting about the ability of the media to change the political scene is nothing more than a (myth). The boom that we are witnessing in digital platforms and social networks, and the role of the media in this context stops at creating media and political awareness for the public, because the media is just a means and not an end, and it relatively affects the political scene but does not make it.

A new media system

Journalist Abdul Rahman Al-Rashed said during the virtual session included in the Arab Media Forum today: “We are witnessing a new media system in the region based on targeting a specific segment that has specific human and geographic characteristics, unlike the previous model that targeted and addressed the public in general.” At the end of the session, Al-Rashed confirmed that the Corona crisis changed the Arab media landscape, and during the spread of the epidemic, the media workers discovered that the world is not only politics, and that there are more important issues for humanity such as health, medicine and other topics related to human survival and development.

The activities of the Arab Media Forum were transmitted via live coverage of all its sessions, which included the Arab Journalism Award Ceremony, through various digital platforms and social networks of the Dubai Press Club, and on the club’s website and the Arab Media Forum, where the number of followers exceeded 10 thousand followers on Twitter Live , Facebook Live and Instagram Live, in addition to the official platform for the virtual session of the Forum this year, to cement its position as the largest annual event to stand up for the state of Arab media, as the wide coverage of the Forum on various digital platforms and social networks constituted a unique interactive experience in the fields of media innovation, And a realistic picture of what the Arab media could be like in the future.
