37 total app downloads in 2022


A recent report by Sensor Tower showing the top 10 most downloaded apps worldwide in the first quarter of 2022 from Google Play and the App Store revealed that total app downloads totaled 37 billion in the first quarter of 2022, an increase of 1.4% compared to the first quarter of 2021.

The majority of the 10 most downloaded apps were social media platforms, with Meta and ByteDance having six of the top 10.

10- Spotify

The four Meta platforms on the list are Instagram, Facebook, WhatsApp and Messenger, while ByteDance owns the TikTok app and video editing platform CapCut.

Outside the top ten are Zoom and WhatsApp Business (another app owned by Meta).

TikTok’s winding road to the top

In the first quarter of 2021, TikTok surpassed 3.5 billion downloads ever, becoming the fifth app (and first non-Meta app) to reach the milestone. Given that the app was banned in India as of June 2020. Prior to the ban, India accounted for 30% of TikTok downloads.

India is not the only country that has banned the use of TikTok, as Pakistan has blocked the app several times over concerns about “inappropriate” content. However, it should be noted that the ban in Pakistan only lasted a few days before it was lifted, and currently, Pakistanis have access to the platform.

TikTok isn’t just the most downloaded app in the world – it’s also the highest-grossing non-game app, based on Q1 2022 earnings from the App Store and Google Play:

TikTok generated approximately $821 million in consumer spending last quarter. The video sharing platform was the highest-grossing app on the App Store, and the second highest-grossing app on Google Play, right behind Google One.

While none of the Meta platforms made it into the top ten in terms of total revenue, these platforms make a lot of money that doesn’t necessarily flow through the app stores. In 2021, Meta generated over $117.9 billion in revenue, with more than 97% coming from advertising.

Impact of the corona pandemic

The pandemic has had a massive impact on the app market. In 2020, app spending on things like premium access, in-app purchases, and subscriptions rose 30% year over year to $111 billion.

And while COVID-19 restrictions are eased in most places around the world, spending on apps isn’t likely to dwindle anytime soon. By 2025, spending is expected to grow to $270 billion.
